Anonymous Shut Down SABC, 5fm and SAfm Websites

A group claiming to be part of hacktivist network Anonymous says it has launched a cyber attack on SABC websites.

The South African public broadcaster’s main site as well as the 5-FM and SA-FM and other websites were attacked around midday on Sunday.

An organisation called Anonymous Africa has claimed responsibility on Twitter [@zim4thewin].

The Twitter account further said on Sunday that it had carried out a ‘Distributed Denial of Service’ (DDos) attack against the broadcaster. This type of cyber attack involves flooding a website’s server with thousands of requests that eventually disrupt the performance of the server.

The broadcaster recently banned the screening of images showing the destruction of property during protests and the reading of news headlines and articles on radio and television.

The websites were down at the time of this publication.
