SARS says Malema owes R20 million in tax

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) is chasing Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema to recover R20 million it says he owes in tax.

According to IOL, SARS claims that Malema owes R18 million for arrears on his taxes, plus another R2 million in interest for the 2005 to 2011 tax years.

Last year (2015), the taxman cancelled an agreement it had entered into with Malema pertaining to the terms and conditions under which he was to pay off his debt.

It claims Malema had failed to come to the table, “by not complying with the conditions of the agreement”.

Revealing that the possibility of the EFF king being sequestrated is looming large, it disclosed that SARS decided to do away with the agreement it initially worked out with Julius Malema as he’s “not complying with the conditions of the agreement”.

Reacting, Juju went to the high court in Pretoria on Monday in quest for an order to keep the payment arrangement he made with SARS in 2014. He argued that he’s been faithfully upholding the agreement and “does not owe a cent”.

Sars refused to make the court papers available to the media, saying that it “cannot be seen to run a parallel process with the court”.

Judgment was reserved.
